Brand New Feature!
Following Alliance HQ's advice, I'm going to try getting around the BlogSpot Permalink Problem. This involved having titles on my posts for some reason. So, now my posts will have titles. Yay!

Because it's been on Dave
Because it's been on Dave Barry's blog, I'm sure everyone already knows about the woman trampled at WalMart. What get's me is WalMart's reaction:
Ellzey said Wal-Mart officials called later Friday to ask about her sister, and the store apologized and offered to put a DVD player on hold for her...."We are very disappointed this happened," Burk said. "We want her to come back as a shopper."
How nice of them! They put a DVD player on hold for her. It seems to me that if you really wanted her business later on, you'd just give her the DVD player. And maybe a new TV. It might have warded off the lawsuit that you know is coming.

Something I saw in my
Something I saw in my local paper this morning: Some educators lament trend away from liberal arts.
Key Quotes:
College of Charleston president Lee Higdon is a soft-spoken man, but he gets passionate when he launches into his defense of a traditional liberal arts education.
And he swears it’s not just because he leads the state’s largest liberal arts college.
Riiiiight.
A “liberal arts” curriculum generally fits into several broad categories, the social sciences (sociology, anthropology), the humanities (English, philosophy, classics), the natural sciences (biology, geology) and the arts.
Data from the National Center for Education Statistics show a decrease in those areas. Compared to 1970, degrees earned in English and literature, for example, have dropped by about 13,000; and degrees in foreign languages are down by 6,000.
Well, duh! What are you going to do with an English and Literature degree? Besides become an English Literature teacher and perpetuate useless knowledge. (See my earlier post about poetry, Friday, Oct 24) People need skills that will get them jobs. Or as my Dad put it, "People need to eat."
That's why I'm a business management major, not an English major. (Only a few more weeks of literature to go!)

It's nice to know how
It's nice to know how competent my local police force is. They spent all kinds of time trying to catch this bank robber, who during the chase broke into two houses, then stole and wrecked a police car. They took him to the hospital, where (my emphasis):
Kenneth Lee Brown was allowed to go into a rest room at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center while he was handcuffed.
Spartanburg police Capt. Billy Norris said Brown climbed into the ceiling and had not been recaptured. Norris said officers weren't sure how long Brown had been missing.
Police called in additional officers and hospital security searched the building, and Norris said authorities were sure he was not inside.
An employee reported that her purse and personal belongings were missing, and Norris said Brown is accused of taking them.
I need to move. Soon.

Glenn Reynolds: Evil Scientist
Does anyone else think that Glenn Reynolds bears a striking resemblance to Wayne Selenski in Honey I Shrunk the Kids?

Yummy Cheddar X! 1. What's
Yummy Cheddar X!
1. What's the funniest town name you've ever seen?
A girl in my speech class last year told us that she lived in North Pole, Alaska. That, of course, led to no end of teasing throughout the rest of the semester
2. What was the last museum you went to?
Um... I went to one of the Smithsonians on my high school senior trip (Air and Space). Pretty neat.
3. When was the last time you were grossed out? (I'd been thinking about narrowing this down to the last time you were grossed out a pal's house but why limit responses?)
When I saw this: Tapeworms!
4. What is the best blog title you've come across or made up on your own?
I like the Patriette. It's clever.
5. Do you live in your hometown now? What caused you to stay or move away?
Sort of; I was born in Barge, the BJU hospital. My mom and dad lived in Greenville, SC, then we moved to Georgia, and then back to Spartanburg (30 mi from Greenville). All for Dad's job.
6. If you were a criminal mastermind, how would you take over the world?
I'd buy plane tickets from Greenville to NY to London to Paris, etc back to Greenville. I'd steal things between flights from the local airports. Thus, I would take, over the world.

::comes up for air:: Wow.
::comes up for air::
Wow. That was a long weekend + couple of days.
Saturday: Wake up, shower, go out with church group to rake leaves for shut-ins/visit with them. Eat lunch. Visit another shut-in. Go home. Go to school for a society brother/sister outing. Enjoy this. Go to the library to work on stupid American Lit. paper. Discover that no one has written anything about your topic. Struggle to come up with a new one. Fail. Go home. Sleep.
Sunday: Wake up, shower/eat breakfast, church, brief video game time, lunch, other homework (skip choir practice to finish it in time), eat dinner, go to church, go home, take care of more homework, go to bed.
Monday: Wake up, shower/breakfast, go to school, get done with classes/chapel at noon, lunch, go to library all afternoon to find out what to write about, figure something out, see advisor to make sure it will work, go back to library, spend what's left of the afternoon (til after 5pm) finding reading material, go home, look up more reading material and type up an annotated bibliography and outline to turn in on Tuesday.
After that, things died down a bit, but it's going to be very nice to relax for a couple of days. Ah.......

Wow! That's two weeks I've
Wow! That's two weeks I've missed ofCheddar X! Double dose this time; actually a triple dose since this weeks is double sized already.
1. What's the best advice you've ever gotten?
Hmm... Probably that if you ever doubt God's will, after having gone to the Bible and gotten the counsel of godly friends, to take a baby step in the direction you're contemplating. As long as you're praying for God to direct your path and for his wisdom, he won't let you get too far in the wrong direction.
2. What is the best thing you've ever found?
That I've ever found? I tend to think blogging is pretty good, as is the software from
StarDock, and Real Alternative (see the post below). Oh, did you mean a tangible object? Not sure. Probably the book
Rich Dad, Poor Dad.
3. What three words describe your blog?
Intermittent. BJU student.
4. What was the most recent thing you did that seemed like a good idea at the time but later events proved otherwise?
Not sure, sorry. If something comes to me, I'll edit this.
5. What two celebrities would you most like to see fight to the death?
Michael Jackson and the head of the National Organization of Women. The womanliest man and the manliest women.
6. What do you think is the best thing about the internet? What's the worst?
I love being able to know virtually
anything in seconds. On the other hand, I hate the sluts who try to get me to view their naked bodies. Just leave me alone for crying out loud.
And now, this week:
1. What's your favorite/least favorite movie?
Aw, I hate this question. There are a lot of good movies. I like pretty much anything made by Pixar, and Shrek. My least favorite is easy to pick out: Inspector Gadget 2, a Disney straight-to-video disaster. Awful, awful, awful. Not fit for human consumption.
2. What's the best movie-adaptation of a book?
Um... Lord of the Rings is the only one that comes to mind...
3. What movie makes you cry?
I don't cry when I watch movies; I tend to disconnect myself more than that. The scene in The Fellowship of the Ring after Gandalf "dies" is touching though.
4. What movie do you watch to cheer you up?
I don't know; usually if I'm feeling sad, I'll do something at my computer, get my mind off of it. Or else I go feel sorry for myself for a while, then kick myself and get doing something worthwhile.
5. Any amusing stories involving movies or the movie theater?
Not really. I've never been to a movie theatre (parental restriction, and now a BJU restriction).
6. Would you rather go to the theater or stay home and watch a movie?
I guess stay at home :-)
7. Are you more awed by a good plot or special effects?
Plot, definitely. Although the effects have to back up the plot; I can't watch the original series of Star Trek without giggling at the pitiful effects. But OTOH, Enterprise has great fx, but lousy plot and actors/characters, as did Voyager before it. That's hard to overcome. DS9 was the best--a good mix of fx and a great story.
8. Who is your favorite/least favorite actor/actress?
Another one of those hated questions. I like Allison Mack, who plays Chloe on Smallville (I know, not a movie; deal with it). Least favorite actress would have to be Kristen Kruek, who plays Lana Lang on Smallville. (Die Lana! Die!) Favorite Actor: Lots of possibilities here: John Glover or Michael Rosenbaum, Lionel and Lex Luthor respectively on Smallville, a number of actors on DS9 and ST: TNG; Hanks isn't bad. Good actors aren't hard to find. Neither are bad ones; I don't remember the names of the ones I make fun of.
9. What's your favorite cult movie?
Cult movie? You scary. I don't watch Jim Jones' home videos.
10. Matrix Revolutions, worth the wait or WTF?
See 5 & 6. I haven't even see Revisited yet.
*sigh of relief*

We get to go see
We get to go see MacBeth next week! I'm excited. (You can tell by the exclamation point). If I'm not mistaken, Dr. Bob is going to play the title role. (Yep) Which should be interesting, given his accent. As a child, he had a very, very southern accent, as you know if you've ever seen any of the old Unusual Films movies. Now, it's just kind of weird. Listen (Real Player format) If that link doesn't work, just go here and pick a message by Bob Jones III. Especially listen for words like "huge." He says it "hyooj," emphasizing the vowel sound.
It's a role that he has played before, and quite well. His wife, Benneth, plays Lady MacBeth, IIRC. And BJU plays, especially Shakespeare plays, are renown for being really well done.
Attendance for students is compulsory. But few people complain (about the plays; the semesterly opera and instrumental concert are another matter; they aren't as good, IMHO), as they offer an excellent dating opportunity.
But, I'm not dating anyone this time around; instead I will be going with a group of my friends (both female and male) from my church. I think that's likely to be more fun; it's certainly less trouble and stress.
Besides, I think it might not be a great idea to take someone on the first date to a tragedy. That's some kind of omen, isn't it?

Hey, I'm back. For now.
Hey, I'm back. For now. More or less. You know Dr. Bob told us in chapel about a guy who said that medical school was easy compared to Bob Jones academic requirements, and I've heard of another guy making similar statements from a law school. It's encouraging to hear that.
Anyway, in case you wonder, that's why I don't blog often. Usually my time is spent on Expository Writing papers, American Lit. papers, reading 30+ ~8 1/2" x 11" pages of Management or Accounting texts at once, weekly meetings for my management project, discipleship group meetings on tuesday evenings, church, going to MacBeth (that's actually next week), going to Writers' Forum meetings, etc, etc, etc. Add to that a 35 minute drive each way to and from school, and life gets just a little busy.
I'll stop whining now. Everyone's busy, I know.

Once again, sorrow flows from
Once again, sorrow flows from my heart for my infrequent posting. We had a church missions conference last week, so Monday-Wednesday evenings were taken by church, thursday was taken by homework, and friday was my crash day: TV, reading Honor Among Enemies by David Weber, etc. Today I found Cheddar X through Pyrojection Here's my responses to this week's questions:
1. What good did you do in the world today?
I contributed to the economy by providing valuable services to a local quick-service dining establishment. (Translation: I worked at Chick-fil-A)
2. What fashion trend are you glad that's gone away? Or what trend are you waiting to go away?
Glad to see gone: How about this?

As far as waiting to go away: The exposed mid-riff. First off, half the women who try it are too fat for it anyway, and second, it's just disgusting. In fact, any fashion trend started by Brittany Spears deserves to die an unspeakable death.
3. What's your greatest sports moment, your own or one you've witnessed?
The greatest sports moment I've ever seen was my senior year of high school. My high school boys team was playing some other Christian high school, and the score was extremely close; we were something like two points behind. The clock is running, and BRRRRRRR the buzzer goes off, and we apparently lose. But wait! Our coach had called a time out two or three seconds before the timer went off; the clock is set to ~three seconds and the time-out is held. The teams reposition themselves on the court. The timer begins. The man with the ball passes it to Josh, a junior, who throws a wild three point shot at the buzzer--and
makes it! The crowd goes wild.
4. Who would you nominate for the most annoying person award?
So many possibilities: The cast of IndyMedia, Michael Moore, war protesters, Brittany Spears/Madonna/Aguilara/any other rock'n'roll slut, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, etc.
5. What do you do to get yourself ready to write? Either blogging or other writing? (I.e. I'm a whiskey drinker and like to have a tumbler to sip from when I write fiction).
I usually have a glass of Dr. Pepper nearby; generally, I surf the net and write about whatever I find. I ought to find some habit to get ready to write; maybe then, I'd do it more often.
6. Mac or PC or Linux? Why? (I'm curious about this because it seems like the majority of bloggers I know are Mac folks but maybe I'm just wishfully thinking).
PC. I like computers that run most software. And I like mice that have multiple buttons; that's the one reason I'd never, ever own a Mac: One button? Are you kidding me? As far as linux goes, I want a computer that works when I turn it on, little/no tweaking required.
Anyway, maybe I'll do this regularly. Right now, I need to go to bed, or I'll end up sleeping through church. G'Night.

Speaking of cool MP3 players,
Speaking of cool MP3 players, here's one that conducts music directly into your skull. It was designed for being able to listen to music underwater; one alternative use mentioned in the article was for underwater communication with divers and such. Pretty nifty! And a lot less painful than a tooth implant.

I want one of these:
I want one of these: a Dell Digital Jukebox, the latest competitor to the iPod. This thing, according to the specs, has a battery life of 16 hours. The reviewer tested that, and it ran for 20. Plus it can be used as a 20 gig hard drive, if you so desire. And I do... :-) When I start running out of hard drive space, chances are, this is what I will buy.
