Here we go…

It’s that time of year again: Classes begin on Wednesday–for most people. I’m special: Classes don’t start for me until Thursday. I’ve got a great schedule for this semester, although it’s a little lighter than normal: All of my classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays! Here’s what I’ve got:

  • Legal Environment of the Business
  • Management Policies–I’ve heard this class is a monster
  • Fundamentals of Technical Writing
  • Christian Living Forum
  • Foundations For Biblical Lifestyle
  • (possibly via correspondance over Christmas Break) Business Law

I would have taken a class on interviewing and hiring people for a business, but it was at eight in the morning MWF: If I took it, I’d have to go to Chapel too on those days, so that one hour class would have cost me 18 hours a week. (Leaving at seven to get there at eight, the class at eight, two empty hours, chapel, and an hour back, 3 times a week.) So, no dice. Oh well; guess I’ll have to find an actual book to read on the topic.

The other interesting thing for me this semester: My brother is starting at BJU this semester! He’s actually a dorm student (crazy kid!), and he’s working on campus (crazier kid!). He’s on the custodial crew cleaning up the student center (so don’t litter!).

Oh, here’s something for my fellow BJU Bloggers to watch out for: We’re on the radar. ;-) There’s a new section in the handbook about blogging which you should probably read. Basically, just behave yourselves out there.

Anyway, how about you guys: Are you looking forward to the school year? Or are you dreading it?

See you there!

    That’s interesting. What’s considered misbehavior?

And isn’t BJU still blocking all the major blog hosts? Maybe the school’s effort to regulate blogs will lead to its dropping the block.

The Technical Writing course should be good - that’s a good all around skill to have.

Business Law is a big part of the CPA exam - which I would recommend you take. I think its too important to take via correspondence.

Here’s the relevant portion of the handbook, verbatim:

    Blogs and other public forums
Whatever a believer posts on a blog, website, or forum must not violate scriptural commands that forbid abusive, slanderous, complaining, profane, irreligious, blasphemous, or tale-bearing speech. A student using such language will be disciplined as if he had spoken these words in a classroom presentation, student meeting, or published document.

Yes, BJU blocks sites like Blogger and TypePad, but they also block sites like GeoCities. They’re concerned more what others publish rather than their students, I think.

Gordo: I hope it’s a good class; I changed my minor to Tech Writing from PR Journalism this semester.

I’m guessing that “complaining” is a good catch-all category.

Well, Tech writing is a good all around skill to have but I wouldn’t want to do it for a living. Last week, for example, I wrote out in detail all the steps my client would take to setup “sister” companies in 22 countries, conduct joint business together and then consolidate in compliance with FASB 52. I learned how to write that way the hard way - a class would have been helpful.

I still thinking Accounting is a great Minor - you can always fall back on it whether its doing taxes, write-up work, temporary assignments etc. It can pay a lot of bills while you’re trying to break into to something else.

Just my opinion - but I’m prejudice - I think its the best profession there is.

btw - what is “Foundations for Biblical Lifestyle” - it sounds gruesome. “Lifestyle” - yuck.

  7. Blog Jones Says:

As useful and as necessary as accounting is, I’ve always thought it was kind of boring. I know there’s good money in it–a lot of good money in it–but the work doesn’t seem particularly interesting, you know?

My picture of an accountant’s firm is a cubicle farm full of guys in white shirts going through page after page and pile after pile of paperwork. But I imagine that’s probably an inaccurate picture.

The course catalog has this description:

Bi 430 - Foundations For Biblical Lifestyle
This class discusses issues of godly Christian living to prepare senior students to assume their adult responsibilities in the Christian home, the church, and the community.
    Both semesters, two hours.

The course textbook is entitled Does God Believe in Atheists, which I am sure will treat Atheism with all the fairness and unbiasedness that BJU’s religion courses are famous for.

I picked it fit nicely in the schedule, and because they wouldn’t let me into the Biblical Role of Women:

Bi 410 - The Biblical Role of Women

A study of the biblical passages that reveal God’s role for women in the home, the church, and society in general, along with explanation of how evangelical feminists either disregard or misinterpret these passages in order to support their feminist agenda. Open only to women.

Well, at least they’re upfront about their biases.

Whatever happened to the old standby’s like “Acts” or “Life of Christ?” those were pretty good classes.

I can’t imagine why The Biblical Role of Women would be open only to women. Are they saying that men have no need to understand these critical issues?! I guess its only evangelical feminists which misinterpret.

My picture of an accountant’s firm is a cubicle farm full of guys in white shirts going through page after page and pile after pile of paperwork. But I imagine that’s probably an inaccurate picture.

    1. I haven’t worn a white shirt in 10 years.
    2. I haven’t worn a tie in 5.
    3. “Page after page and pile after pile” describes Forensic Accounting which sounds interesting but is deadly dull.
    4. While there isn’t huge mega-bucks in accounting, there are very good bucks.
    5. Stay as far away from what remains of the Big 8, 6, 4 as you can.
    6. Over the 20 years I’ve been in the biz, the job market has never been bad.
    7. Accounting, like art, music, archtecture, painting, scuplture or literature is about big structures. My job is building big structures for international organizations. Nothing I know of is more exciting and more immediate and it pays real well too.
