Why the Rapture Won’t Happen Anytime Soon

Adrienne over at the Liberty Belles posted an interesting statistic this morning, quoting from Vanity Fair:

With its highly figurative language, Revelation is subject to profoundly differing interpretations. Nevertheless, LaHaye’s followers insist on its literal truth and accuracy, and they have gone to great lengths to calculate exactly what this passage of Revelation means.

As we walk down from the top of the hill of Megiddo, one of them looks out over the Jezreel Valley. “Can you imagine this entire valley filled with blood?” he asks. “That would be a 200-mile-long river of blood, four and a half feet deep. We’ve done the math. That’s the blood of as many as two and a half billion people.”

She then responds:

But wait, if there are about 2 billion Christians worldwide, that means that that river will contain only slightly more than half the blood of the unsaved. Where’s the rest of that plasma going to go?

It gets worse: As of that time, (1) the Rapture will have happened, so those 2 billion are out of the picture, leaving some 4 billion unsaved to populate the earth and (2) A good deal more than half of those remaining people have been wiped out due to wars, plagues, “natural” disasters, and supernatural beings. And then don’t forget that the one-world government would be persecuting and killing the post-trib Christians (and people of other faiths unwilling to yield to the one world government).

The world population will probably have to double before the rapture can occur, just on the basis of the amount of blood needed to fill the Megiddo valley.

That’s assuming the Megiddo valley doesn’t become a landfill and shrink considerably in the near future. Plus, does that figure take into consideration the blood volume of horses for each of those?

Plus, you’re coming at it from a pre-trib rapture view. NOT to get into that debate, but supposing the rapture happened today and we’re talking horse blood down there -OR- we get raptured out of here after the tribulation, things could start up pretty soon.

  2. Bob Says:

What a gruesome view of the future! It sure is a lot easier just to understand that Revelations was written by a man who likely suffered from delusions or scizophrenia or some such other malady; then you don’t have to worry about calculating the volume of blood of massacred innocents, etc.

Of course, we could all get wiped out by a highly-evolved virus or overrun by nanotechnology. Two seemingly unlikely scenarios, perhaps, but each more likely than those imagined by John a good two thousand years ago.

  3. Paul Wilson Says:

While I agree that it’s unlikely that the Rapture will happen any time soon, that doesn’t stop the Christian Right from trying to make it happen!

  4. gordo Says:

I’m still puzzled by Mounty’s comment - is he serious or is he being ironic?

  5. Blog Jones Says:

I don’t know why you’d think his comments ironic. They are just other things to consider when thinking of the blood that will fill the Megiddo Valley — that when that event happens the valley might not be the depth it is today, and the blood would be horses’ as well as humans’.

  6. Barbara H. Says:

Oops! The above comment was by Barbara H., not Blog Jones.

  7. gordo Says:

Well, first of all I don’t know of any countries in the world today which still go into battle using horses.

  8. Josh Says:

I used to believe in God and religion, until I came of age of understanding my surroundings and I understood how corrupt it was. I mean the CAtholics killed Joan Of Arc who claimed God spoke to her. The Roman Catholics were the one who killed Jesus. I mean come on, they didnt stop persecuting christians until COnstantine saw God supposedly one day during battle. THey fed Christians to lions and made them fight in Gladiator matches. Come on people how blind do you have to be? THe rapture? Come on man. Religion is man made, its a way for man to feel safe and have something to hope for when they die. What is man’s main goal? ETERNAL LIFE, LIFE AFTERDEATH, IMMORTALITY. Im not saying there is no God, we just didnt pop out of nowhere, but I think the God you are all thinking of is not the God you think he or she is. The Revelations was written by a pyschotic schizo old man. NAtural disasters? Wars? Come on people, that has been happening since before JEsus’ time. WHat say of the Neanderthal man? DInosaurs? WHy is our DNA linked so closely with monkeys? Did God rapture the common cavemen? OR the Dinosaurs? COme on now be realistic. A gazillion people just leaving the Earth into thin air, highly doubtful. If religions were not so corrupt, and power hungry like CAtholics and protestants as well as others Id see their points, but when the Catholic church changes scriptures and verses in the bible something is up there. Until I see the original scriptures and bible, Im not convinced. Jesus was a real person, but more of a religious leader who was important as the pope of his time for his religious leadings. I dont think he was the messiah, several other people were slated to be the messiah as well, and for the war In Israel, well we arent fighting anymore are we? BEsides how many times has God’s land been under invasion and attack, and the Christian evangelists have screamed THE RAPTURE! OMG THE RAPTURE! ITS COMING! and poof, 20 years later we are still here. Until Jesus comes to my door step, or I am saved miraculously Im not convinced.

  9. Barbara H. Says:

I would agree with what you say about the Catholic church. But I don’t equate the Catholic church with Christianity. BTW, I don’t believe the Catholic church was around when Jesus was crucified.

  10. Andrew Says:

In my personal opinion I think that Thor will swing his hammer to crack the sky, and then Odin will descend from the clouds and slay the wicked of the world thus beginning ragnarok, that in Viking myth was the end of the world and the universe.

  11. Leanne Says:

I do believe the rapture is going to happen soon. Look at all the signs. The number 666 can be reconised today, it was created by Javia Solana in the year 2000. The EU is getting stronger, Iran will have a nuclear bomb by 2009, with the help of Russia (Ezekiels prophecy will come to pass in the not to distant future) The Jews are ready to rebuild their temple, Israel will close its borders by 2010 when the bible says at the time Israel will be living in peace and safety. The all of a sudden Russia, Iran and the Arab world will attack Israel as the bible predicted in the last days. The EU have alreay started making peace treatys and covernants, and th EU have seven year terms which they review mid term. The EroMed starts 1st Jan-Dec 31 2013 and they will renew a covernant with many. It may not be the seven in Daniel but it shows we are not to far away from the real thing, and yes the rapture is not long. The tribulation will not be to many years away the way this world is going, and I certainly believe the antichrist is alive today, waiting to come to power. I have read Heaven is so real by sister Choo Thomas, and it has sold over one million copys around the world. Jesus told her in 1996 he is coming a lot sooner that people think. It will be this generation, but as to when I do not know. Her granddaughters who were 10 months, 18, months and a few months old at the time Jesus appeared to her, were grow up when they were raptured in the vision Jesus showed her. She did not know how old they were, but said they appeard grow up, with their hair down to their shoulders. Yes Jesus is coming very, very soon., and more than likely this generation will see the return of Christ.

  12. Vanda Says:

I am replying to what Josh said about the Roman Catholics. It was not the Roman Catholics that killed Jesus. They turned him over to his own people, and they wanted him to be crucified. The Roman Catholics only carried out what they wanted.Watch the movie,”The Greatest Story Ever Told”,if you want the real truth about Christ’s crucifiction.

  13. Leanne Says:

This is a message for Josh. The rapture is real, whether you want to believe it or not. Won’t you be shocked when you discover that you are one of these poor individuals that are left behind. The total devistation you unbelievers will have to face is horrendous. You have no idea what is coming on the word do you? No because you are blind. I would just love to see the look on your face when the antichrist goes and kills many millions for refusing the mark, and I would love to see your face when God pours out his wrath on an unbelieving world. You will not be able to stand up against it. You will be devoured from fire from Heaven fro God. I will not even be here, because I plan to be taken by Jesus in the rapture. I am saved, so I will be going, you will not be. And then if you still do not believe in Jesus and repent to Jesus and except Jesus you will be thrown into the eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels,to burn in excrusiating pain forever. Your choice.

    erm..no actually.

  16. miss christine Says:

Hey, LEANNE, wow! I was tortured after reading your statements. By your words one might think you are actually looking forward seeing the lost suffer. Shame on you. One who loves Jesus, knows what love is. Period. Why the hatefulness. You are to speak in love, even when others reject the message and warning of the Bible. I am glad you are not Jesus. I would be scared. He would have never spoken as you did. Check yourself into the Holy hospital, read what you wrote. Can you picture Jesus saying that in the Bible or to anyone. Your heartless words contradict what He came and did for us. I have to wonder where you attitude manifested from. Read what (Intergritycyg.net) wrote below you. What a contrast of two believers hearts! I will pray for you! As far as the End times, the catching of of the believers, and the tribulation, WE ALL NEED TO BE CAREFUL OF WHAT INTERPRETATION WE TELL OTHERS> This subject alone warrants careful individual reading alone with a prayer prior to reading that the Lord will reveal to us through his Holy Spirit, the correct sequence. it is obviously confusing, I for one am still not convinced anyone will have a second chance. One the catching up happens, I don;t read there are any second chances. Even believers will suffer tribulation. I need to read and and re-read. The bottomline is be ready now, enjoy the gift, spread the good news, and be of service and good cheer. We were in this end times for a reason rather than in some other century. Be blessed.

  17. Satan Says:

I just want to say that I don’t believe revelations can be taken literally. So I believe to think in literal terms when revelations is concerned is foolish

  18. Pea Says:

I don’t think we need to get angry with our words saying things like “I can’t wait to see your face when the tribulation occurs.” I personally don’t want to see any one suffer, but suffer they will when this happens so repent and be saved from the evil that is about to encompass the earth! Jesus is comming soon weather we belive it or not…The ten nations are starting to come together….Soon America won’t just be the USA, it will be the intire American continent as one nation…This will dwindle the nations down quite a bit….Then the rest of the world will do the same till we only have ten nations with ten kings over each one….
Hopefully we will have a pretrib rapture or every human being on earth will suffer! But he will keep his wings around his people to protect them no matter what….I know there will be heavenly intervention for all who love Christ and profess his name….Jesus, Yeshua, King of Kings, Lord of Lords…..

  19. Lori Says:

In I Thessolonians 4: 16-17 it reads “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ (believers) shall rise first. Then we which are alive and remain(this generation)shall be caught up together with themin the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 says But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world(Satan)hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine upon them. The choice will always be YOUR choice. Choose this day whom you will serve. If BAAL(Satan)be god then serve him but, if God be God them serve him. No man can serve 2 masters:for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon(the world).Jesus will always love you Josh. Don’t take some other mans interptations of God’s word read it for yourself John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth will make you free.(KJV).Study the Hebrew Scriptures from it original text it has not been changed. God Bless You You Josh and I pray you find the right way.

  20. Lookinup Says:

God will do exactly what he says he will do… Ask for understanding and for your eyes to be opened.

You must calculate and include the following information:
    - Battle area - Valley of Jehoshaphat (600 feet wide at top / 20 miles long). The Kedron Brook flows through the valley and is on average 3 feet wide (we will round up and say 5 feet)
    - Average height of a horse 14.2 hands (or 4 feet 10 inches - we will round up to 5 feet)
    - Flowing blood 180 miles or 950,400 feet.
    - Amount of blood in human body 6 quarts or 1.5 gallons.

Answer #1 = Minimum width using Kedron Brook.
    length (flowing blood) 950,400 feet
    x
    depth (horses bridle) 5 feet
    x
    width (Kedron Brook) 5 feet
    x
7.48 (Convert cubic foot to gallons)
    /
    1.5 (Gallons in human body)
    =
    Death toll of 118,483,200

Answer #2 = Let’s solve this another way. Right now there are approximately 7 billion people on earth. Let’s say 1 billion are
    raptured.
    That leaves 6 billion.
25% (1.5 billion) will die in famine and disease.
    This leaves 5.5 billion.
    1/3 (1.8 billion)will die during trumpet #6.
This leaves roughly 2.7 billion people on earth. Let’s say 2 million die during the other periods of judgement just to give us a round 2.5 billion people left on earth. All who will fight and die in the battle of Armageddon. That means…

    2.5 billion people
    x
    1.5 gallons of blood
    /
7.48 (Convert gallons to cubic feet)
    /
    depth (horses bridle) 5 feet
    /
    length (flowing blood) 950,400 feet
    =
    Width of flowing blood stream
    106 feet / 35 yards / .020 miles

Both are totally plausible, and realistic. Whether or not the number is correct - the event will happen.

  22. Kharris Says:

Josh, my heart goes out to you because you once knew the truth but have left its path. The Bible speaks about people like you and how hard it is for them to come back to the truth. Although it may be hard, it is not impossible, I hope you will ask God to really reveal himself to you, and He will. Oh and about being “realistic”…you need to get real and understand that God’s thoughts are not our thoughts. If we could figure God out then what would be so AWESOME about Him? I am now at the University and getting really good grades and I do not believe in evolution…if it were true it would be a law and not a THEORY. And God would also be a liar; and my God is not a man that He should lie. Evolution and Atheism go together…go figure! It is the creation theory for people who do not believe in God, Jesus Christ or the Holy Spirit(The Blessed Trinity)…you seem to have some belief in God…who by the way is clearly a HE. Don’t let religion get in your way…seek God NOT RELIGION. Christianity is not a religion, it is a belief in Jesus Christ as your Saviour and a lifestyle. Religion is man made…hence the corrupt Catholics, who are not Christians by the way. Whether you believe the rapture is going to happen or not won’t stop it from happening…ask yourself this question, what if the Bible is true? Weigh the pros Josh. Be ready, I am trying my best to be and I am seeking God. Many are saying it could happen this September 2008, I don’t know but whenever it happens I want to be ready.

  23. DJTEEL Says:

Most people that i talk to about christianity and why so many people shun it is because the church has been teaching for tons of years that one’s getting to heaven is based on ,not JUST repentance and accepting christ, but the fact that one’s salvation is determined by legalism(the movies one watches ,the kind of music one listens to,etc..).
not watching horror movies ,not listening to rock music, etc, are not things that determine one’s salvation whatsoever .when i was a young christian i kept getting attacked by others in the church for my cigarette smoking.the bible says no more about SMOKING than it does about eating sugar or drinking tea.the bible simply states that our bodies are temples and holy,etc..the church took off on preaching against rock and roll and movies and smoking and yada yada yada ,when they should have been teaching about listening to god’s voice about those things.those things don’t condemn a person anyway!!. only the finatic believes that they do!!! the church should have been teaching how to listen to god’s voice and to know false conviction from real conviction.some man behind a pulpit promising to the flock that they’ll not make the rapture or go to hell for the movies they watch or the music they listen to is an idiot. the church has run people off by teaching this nonsense. i’m one of those christians that watch R movies as well as G and PG..I also listen to the current rock music stations.i also pray in the mornings and through out the day and have an active christian life.but i’m not constantly looking for something in my life to ’sacrifice’ to make god happy. there’s a reason why the bible says obedience is better than sacrifice.it’s because if you’re listening to what god tells you as an individual, you’ll know what to do and not do,and contrary to what john hagee says, god DOES NOT expect ALL christians to give up the same things and for all of us to think as christians like minded identically. he’s using a scripture in the bible that if one were to read as he does, every christian would throw away all their music and vhs tapes and dvd’s the very second they become a christian.

can you imagine if heaven was solely for the christians that didn’t do anything?? alot of young christians would be going to hell and totally miss the rapture. and how long would a christian have before he/she decides to get rid of his/her movies or music..a year?? two years?? c’mon be bible specific here..but you can’t!! it’s legalism.sheer legalism. what matters is repentance, jesus and one’s relationsip with him afterward.not whether or not you watch a Bruce Willis or Will Smith movie

  24. DJTEEL Says:

i believe that the rapture is coming soon.very soon.i believe it for the reason that the signs are all existant now.tornados and huricanes and earthquakes, man being killed by the beasts of the fields(disease via aminals),an abundance of insects and it’s all occuring at one time as the bible predicts. Also, europe and countries such as russia and syria are linng up the way they’re predicted, not to mention china of course.i tend to believe studied people regarding the bible.it’s not for one to simply pick up the bible and decide for themselves what it means cause this is applying one’s own interpetation and that’s how people make excuses for what they’re doing when what they’re doing is biblically wrong or immoral.the bible makes it clear that a huge percentage of people attend religious services o hear a message that will tickle their ears..that means these people are being told what THEY want to hear instead of hearing the truth..why? cause they don’t want to hear the truth if it isn’t appealing to them and will simply deny it calling it hate speech, bigotry and so on.i don’t want my ears tickled,i want the truth..if all you want is your ears tickled good luck . i’d rather hear the truth even if i don’t particularly like what it claims.

  25. DJTEEL Says:

another sign i see of the rapture being close is that i see a whole lot of christians veering from their christian beliefs completely or becoming liberal minded to the point of acceptance of immorality and calling it tolerance or changing the particular immoral act to being acceptable with the attitude that Jesus isn’t capable of disliking or hating anyone.\ let me remind some of you that God instructed people to go down and kill people in a certain town as far as even telling them to kill all the children as well.they must have ben some really evil kids.the bible predicts that children will be puting their parents in jail..that sister will be against mother, and so on..family member against family member.this was unheard of not too long ago.but watch what i call the ‘Judge’ shows in the afternoons. judge judy, judge hacket ,etc…family taking on family in a court of law.it’s a shame this world has come to that..suing your own son..or daughter..mother..and the other way around as well..the bible predicts this very clearly.daily newspapers report an abundance of local crime that occured the previous night as well as the previous day.crime in the daytime just wasn’t something that occured that often. now it’s as common as night crime anytime anywhere. i think it’s time for the rapture.i need the break.

  26. DJTEEL Says:

just one more thing..i believe the rapture is close for another reason..more than ever these days,so many christians are not expecting the rapture anytime soon. it’s predicying he’ll come like a thief in the night.well..this would apply to the current times more than anytime since the beginning of His ministry in the new testament.Jesus will come ,suprising those that aren’t ready. what’s interesting about this scripture is the fact that it goes on to tell the reader to be reay or prepared. so many christians have either slidden off the path completely or gone back into sins they at one time had repented of.others simply just aren’t expecting his return any time soon,,why is that?? many posters have answered that already..it’s been so long that the teaching of the rapture(which is a word used defining ring into the air to meet christ as he’ll be saying come up hither and we’ll be raised in the twinkling of an eye),even though the word itself isn’t mentioned biblically).alot of people like to argue the rapture claiming the word is’nt mentioned.they’re corect, but the action defined by the word IS mentioned. but with the action being preached about for so many years and yet nothing has happened, put alot of people into the skepticism mode or they become unbelievers totally.this is exaclty why he’ll surprise so many when he comes and he knew that this would be the reason. i’m surprised that so many don’t realise this.we all believe what we believe for different reasons.i know what i’ve seen and heard in mylifre and i believe in jesus.. god and the bible.i’m not a finatic however. i don’t condemn or speak badly of people that are unbelievers so i only ask the same thing of those people…respect. for they believe what they believe, based their experiences also.

  27. DJTEEL Says:

i apolgise for the typos above…yikes

  28. Joshua Says:

    Josh:

All of your questions are valid questions and I once asked them too. But, they have nothing to do with the validity of the Gospel of Christ. Sure, knowing what happened to the dinosaurs would be great trivial pursuit knowledge, but, it will in no way disprove the existence of God or Christ or that the Bible is not true, word for word.

Only when we truly and honestly study the word of God and pray for His guidance, will we know that these seemingly “inconsistent” events are not inconsistent at all, and usually have nothing to do with the Word of God. That’s not to say that they don’t relate in anyway, just that they have nothing to do with the truthfulness of the Bible.

And Kiki, the Romans did, in fact, feed Christians to the lions and force them to fight as gladiators. The Romans, not the Roman Catholics, did physically crucify Christ, but, at the request of the Jews.

So, you can say that Christ was killed by the Romans for the Jews.

    :)

  29. Dale Choi Says:

Well, you can’t just say there are 2.5 billion Christians and go from there. Sadly, the majority of Christians are unsaved. And that majority is also the Catholic church. Their gospel is wrong if you really go biblical. And how in the heck would you know how much blood it takes to fill the valley? Because you said so?

The Bridegroom comes, Come out to meet him. Matt. 25:6.
From where shall we go out? We shall go out of the great
Babylon, the great whore. Rev. Chapter 17 and 18. This
command of the Lord in Rev. 18:4 is now highly topical.

Never before we have been so nearly Jesus’ coming as we
are now, but how are God’s people prepared? How is the
unity in the faith? Sorry, very bad! God’s people are more
divided now than ever before. Instead of following what
the Bible teaches about the Assembly of God, they have
followed Satan’s false assembly doctrine. They believe
that the Assembly of God is constituted of church systems
    and many religious organizations.

Most Christians have not yet begun to prepare for Jesus’
coming. They can speak and write that Jesus shall come,
and about the signs of the time, yet they do not make any
preparation to meet Jesus. How can we make a preparation?
To make preparation and be ready for Jesus’ coming, God’s
people must get the knowledge of the Assembly of God.

All God’s people must in the first hand begin to study what
the Bible teaches about the Assembly of God. What we
need now before the restoration of the Assembly of God,
it is humility before God’s word and a forgivable disposition
    to each other.

The Assembly of God is no Pentecostal church. Please,
consider what this expression “the Assembly of God” in the
reality implies. The Assembly of God must be the same as
the Greek word “ekklesia”, and the Body of Christ. 1 Cor.
12:12-31. Then it is easy to understand that this has nothing
to do with the Pentecostal Movement. Pentecostal churches
have existed about 100 years, but the Assembly of God has
ever existed since Jesus baptized his first disciples by the
Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gave them the new life in Christ
so that they became born anew. Then the Assembly of God
    was born.
