To explain why it's offensive (although it's fairly self-evident), we need a round of Achievement Test Analogy Time: "Fag" is to homosexual person as "nigger" is to black person. Both words are highly offensive and neither word can legitimately be used in debating an issue. In essence, the BBC attempts to undermine the entire argument against gay marriage by showing these sign-wielding scum as the only possible people who aren't erudite enough to welcome gay marriage with open arms.
But when has the BBC ever been terribly concerned with accuracy or a balanced look at the issues?

To be fair, I don't think the Beeb is making that argument; they're just showing what was actually happening there. If they ignored the protesters all together, they wouldn't be accurately portraying the reality of event.
Having said that, I do think it's sad that these people would try to a) demean homosexuals and b) pretend to read the mind of God.
Finally, I haven't seen anyone present *any* evidence which shows that gay marriage will have a negative impact on our society. If anything, in a time when half of all marriages end in divorce, it seems like a wonderful way to re-inforce the family unit.
Posted by: Bob at May 19, 2004 03:44 PMWhat I'm saying is that by choosing those protestors in particular for their photo shoot, and only those protestors, they imply that anyone who opposes gay marriage is one of these hate-mongers. By doing so, they marginalize the legitimate moral argument against homosexuality.
And there is a legitimate argument against homosexualty. As I've said before though, the same New Testament passage that condemns homosexuality also condemns the "verbally abusive." Both are sins that need to be forgiven by God.
That said, gay marriage probably won't negatively affect anything in society. After all, homosexuals are going to perform homosexual acts, whether or not the law says they're married or not. And since it's the homosexual act that's wrong, according to the Bible, and not the society calling it "marriage," then the whole issue is really a moot point.
